AMPLIFIED: Anticipation

Project type

Sound Design

Date

2024

Description

The first chapter of Amplified, “Anticipation,” explores the exhilaration felt in the moments leading up to a concert. In the initial mix, I immersed the audience in the environment of a live music venue, starting with the sound engineer preparing the space, moving through band members tuning their instruments, and culminating in the arrival of the crowd. This version emphasized seamless integration of multiple songs and smooth transitions, capturing the excitement and energy of being on the verge of a live performance.

A second iteration shifts perspective to follow a fan’s journey from the subway to the concert venue. The mix traces their experience traveling from the subway to their car, navigating the ticket line, and entering the venue. I incorporated a variety of audio sources—sounds from a Walkman and headphones, a car radio, and the venue’s speakers—to create a layered, dynamic audio landscape. This approach allowed the music to accompany the fan throughout their journey, heightening the immersive sense of anticipation before the show begins.

Amplified, developed with Rolling Stone and Brand New World Studios and debuted at the Illuminarium in Las Vegas, is an immersive audio-visual exploration of rock ’n’ roll culture. I contributed by designing foundational audio for each chapter, including atmospheric textures and musical transitions, building each mix from scratch using still images and creative direction. Collaborating closely with writers and producers, I refined the sound through multiple iterative rounds to support the show’s evolving narrative and emotional arc.
